Arne Zuidhoek studied at the Rijks Academy of Fine Arts in Amsterdam. Explored and mastered the technique of the washed ink-drawing and/or grisaille. This technique was used by such artists as Rembrandt and Willem van der Velde and requires a skilled hand and sure knowledge of subjects and material. Zuidhoek also used the watercolours-technique in a new, refreshing way. All in all his works represent - as for effect and richness in ideas - a cross between fantasy and realism. His impetuous style, and unmistakable love to create, his imagination and grand execution, this all has moulded a genre that can successfully claim its own position to the many -isms in the world of fine arts.
In the '80-s of the 20th century the artist lived in Santa Cruz, Californ ia, U.S.A. His work was on show there and in New York and Seattle, and sold via the New Masters Gallery, Carmel, and Kirsten Gallery, Seattle, Washington. Arne Zuidhoek travelled the whole world but always returned to his base in Utrecht, the Netherlands. Utrecht is an ancient city of Roman times, and a bishop's see; it breathes an unreal, bewitching sphere, even in these modern days. ""A city of hidden decay,"" as some historian have it. No wonder Utrecht became the centre of Dutch surrealism. Zuidhoek was raised in Utrecht, and the Utrecht Touch would never leave him. Being abroad Zuidhoek searched for and found ""far-away"" cultures and locations. In the magical countries of North Africa the story-teller within him was born. The result: as early as 1984 his 9th book on folklore and/or history was published.
In addition to the activities as an artist he writes and illustrates books with maritime affairs as a subject. Zuidhoek is interested in piracy because of a fascination for speed and efficiency of the robbery ships. Ships with plenty of cloth and low edges are grateful objects to images. Having sailed in the merchant navy as an able seaman and in his own 63-foot schooner De Hoop, he knows where is he talking and painting about. Arne Zuidhoek, as some critics say, ""knows the ships and their crews and makes them life in drawings and paintings so varied in form and style that it is whether this man is also a kind of filibuster."" In time arose the interest for ""the man behind the pirate."" The dreaded pirate, the maroon, the powerlessness freedom seeker, they were often the sailors who, driven by despair, took law into their own hands. Zuidhoek's knowledge of piracy in general and those of the past in particular, is the result of more than 40 years of research, after visits to almost all pirate bases from which pirates have been active as Tortuga, Madagascar, Jamaica, New York, Algiers , Saleh or Flushing.
